- 5 cupsof rustic bread
- 1/5 cupof olive oil
- 1/4 cupof salt
- 1/5 cupof pepper
Choose a loaf of your favorite rustic bread for making croutons. Start by cutting off as much of the outer crust as possible. If you leave too much of the crust, the bread becomes hard to eat when toasted. Slice the bread into one inch slices and then cut the bread into cubes.
Put your frying pan on a medium heat. Add the olive oil. Add the bread cubes to the pan and drizzle more oil on top and generously season with salt and pepper. Stir the bread around and shake the pan so they distribute in an even way. Adjust your heat is needed to prevent them from burning. Average cooking time is 10 to 12 minutes. Continue to occasionally stir the bread until all the sides are brown and crispy. Alternatively you can toss the bread cubes with oil and spread them in an even layer on a baking sheet. Cook them in an oven at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes.
